Bridging Continents: A New Era in Global Storytelling
A Pioneering Partnership for Diverse Content Creation
At the recent Joburg Film Festival, the internationally acclaimed South African company Both Worlds, renowned for its Emmy-nominated works, unveiled an exciting collaboration with Atlanta-based Freeli Films. This strategic alliance is designed to conceive and produce high-quality microdrama series and cinematic features. These productions will span locations in South Africa, various African nations, and the United States, with a core mission to deliver narratives that deeply connect with South African, broader African, and American viewers, ultimately captivating a worldwide audience.
Taye Diggs Joins the Transcontinental Cast
Acclaimed actor Taye Diggs, who previously collaborated with Freeli Films on the forthcoming romantic drama “Another Man's Wife,” is set to play a pivotal role in the initial co-productions. His involvement will see him share the screen with distinguished South African and other African performers, fostering a vibrant cross-cultural exchange of talent and narrative.
Freeli Films' Vision: Elevating Black Narratives
Under the leadership of CEO J. Carter, Freeli Films was founded on the explicit principle of foregrounding Black stories and Black artistic contributions, both in front of and behind the camera. The company is committed to demonstrating that Black-led dramas are not peripheral but central to the burgeoning microdrama movement. By leveraging its strong connections with prominent U.S. artists, Freeli aims to redefine the landscape of diverse representation in media.
Both Worlds: Decades of African Storytelling Excellence
Both Worlds contributes nearly three decades of award-winning production experience, alongside a creative team deeply embedded in African narrative traditions and broadcasting. Their established distribution networks further bolster the partnership's potential to reach extensive audiences. This rich heritage and expertise are crucial for developing authentic and impactful content.
Introducing Amazi: A New Platform for African Content
The joint productions with Freeli Films will form a premium international segment of Amazi, a fresh content brand and production subsidiary launched by Both Worlds. Amazi is dedicated to creating original short-form vertical content specifically for African audiences, commencing in South Africa and progressively expanding across the continent. This initiative aims to serve a significant and often underserved mobile demographic.
A Focus on Hyperlocal and Global Collaborations
Amazi's content strategy encompasses both hyperlocal African series, produced with local casts in indigenous languages across Africa, and high-end English-language co-productions. These international collaborations, such as the partnership with Freeli Films, will unite South African and African acting talent with globally recognized stars, ensuring a broad appeal and rich narrative tapestry.
Capitalizing on Africa's Mobile Audience Growth
The distribution strategy for Amazi is intricately linked with major mobile operators throughout Africa, allowing the company to tap into the continent's vast mobile viewership, exceeding a billion users. This demographic, often overlooked, represents a critical growth engine for the microdrama sector, which is projected to achieve an impressive annual revenue of $26 billion by 2030. Both Worlds initiated production on its first microdramas in November 2025, under the guidance of executive producer Flavia Motsisi and veteran head writer Karen Jeynes.
Flavia Motsisi: Championing Authentic African Voices
Flavia Motsisi, who will also lead a microdrama panel at the JBX market on March 5, has been appointed Chief Creative Officer for Amazi. Motsisi articulated her vision, stating, “Africa has always possessed dynamic and extraordinary stories. What has been absent is a format specifically tailored to how Africans consume content on mobile devices, in local languages, and with narratives that mirror their own experiences.” She further emphasized, “Amazi is our definitive response to this need. Our alliance with Freeli Films is founded on a shared conviction: that authentic representation is not merely a symbolic gesture towards an audience, but the very cornerstone upon which our creative endeavors are built.”
Shared Values: The Foundation of a Powerful Alliance
Both Worlds' executive chairman, Thierry Cassuto, underscored the foundational alignment with Freeli Films: “We chose to collaborate with Freeli Films because we operate from the same fundamental belief: that the audience for whom we create content deserves to see themselves authentically and unreservedly portrayed on screen.” He added, “South Africa and the broader African continent possess exceptional talent, both in front of and behind the camera, much of which remains undiscovered by the global stage. Amazi serves as the platform to rectify this. Freeli is unequivocally the ideal partner to propel us further than we could ever achieve independently.”
J. Carter's Vision: Building a Lasting Legacy
Freeli Films CEO J. Carter reflected on the partnership's significance: “Our collaboration with Both Worlds extends beyond mere international cooperation; it represents a deliberate strategic alignment rooted in cultural resonance, authenticity, and expansive reach. At Freeli Films, we are committed to engaging Black audiences precisely where they are, rather than conforming to industry assumptions. This commitment translates into crafting microdramas and feature films that genuinely reflect their realities, aspirations, and global impact.” He concluded by stating, “Prioritizing African and African American consumers is not a niche approach; it is the definitive future of narrative creation. By investing in stories that honor the profound depth, complexity, and purchasing power of African audiences, we are not simply expanding market territories; we are actively constructing a lasting legacy.”
