This effort began eight years ago when Carlos Carillo, the pantry’s director, approached a local grocer about donating surplus items. Since then, it has expanded to include numerous partners who donate food that is still safe to consume despite minor issues such as slight damage or slow sales.
Drivers deliver these essential supplies to more than 20 neighborhood pantries throughout northern Nevada from Monday to Friday. Families in need are invited to shop for themselves, selecting produce, meats, dairy products, and shelf-stable items. “Our system allows individuals to choose what they need, ensuring nothing goes to waste,” explains Carillo. Neighborhood pantries open daily at 1 pm, offering support to those facing food insecurity.
