The Joyce Foundation, based in Chicago, is revitalizing its esteemed Joyce Awards, an initiative that has championed artists across the Great Lakes area since its inception in 2004. This relaunch introduces a transformative funding structure, moving away from project-specific allocations to direct, unrestricted grants of $100,000 for each of the four chosen artists. Complementing this, an additional $40,000 grant will be allocated to a Great Lakes-based nonprofit organization, nominated by the award-winning artist, to facilitate the development, expansion, or enhancement of their work within the region. A significant procedural change also comes with the relaunch, introducing a biennial application cycle. Artists from Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin will be eligible in even-numbered years, commencing in 2026, while those in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio can apply in odd-numbered years, starting in 2027. Artists are now invited to self-nominate for the first time, expanding accessibility to the program. The eligibility criteria emphasize artists who delve into issues of racial equity and engage deeply with communities through collaborative methods, encompassing a wide range of artistic disciplines, from visual and performing arts to film, media, literary arts, and interdisciplinary or community-based cultural practices.
