Renowned soprano Renée Fleming has withdrawn from her upcoming performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, joining a growing number of artists who have canceled engagements at the institution.
This decision is not entirely unexpected. Last year, following a significant upheaval in the Kennedy Center's leadership, including the forced resignations of Chairman David Rubenstein and President Deborah Rutter, Fleming stepped down from her advisory role as Artistic Advisor-at-Large. She had held this position for nine years, starting in 2016, and had a long history of performing at the center in various capacities.
Fleming attributed her withdrawal from the May concerts to a "scheduling conflict." While she will no longer appear with conductor James Gaffigan and the National Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra plans to proceed with its May 29 and May 30 dates, with a new soloist and repertoire to be announced subsequently.
The wave of cancellations by musicians, including notable figures like Issa Rae, Low Cut Connie, Rhiannon Giddens, Chuck Redd, the Cookers, and Kristy Lee, stems from controversial changes implemented by President Donald Trump's administration. Shortly after his inauguration in 2025, Trump removed bipartisan board members from the Kennedy Center, and in February 2025, he appointed himself as the board's chairman. By December of the same year, the board, now under Trump's influence, voted to rename the institution the "Trump Kennedy Center." These actions have led to widespread condemnation and further withdrawals from artists, including the Washington National Opera, which ended its 55-year collaboration with the center earlier this month.
