After a two-year absence from its lineup, Rolex is reintroducing the Yacht-Master II, a timepiece celebrated for its intricate functionality. The new references, 126680 and 126688, represent a significant evolution rather than a mere cosmetic refresh, featuring a brand-new movement and a redesigned aesthetic. These models, crafted in either Oystersteel or 18k yellow gold, aim to continue the legacy of this distinctive collection, which first debuted in 2007 and saw an update in 2017, now with a fresh approach to its design and mechanics.
The Yacht-Master collection by Rolex first emerged in 1992, standing out as one of the few entirely new lines since the iconic Daytona's launch in 1963. Initially conceived as a luxurious marine-inspired watch, the Yacht-Master II, introduced in 2007, honed a more specialized purpose: to serve as Rolex's sophisticated regatta chronograph. This focus made the YM2 a remarkably capable instrument for yacht racing, often overshadowing its luxurious appeal and distinctive design.
The original Yacht-Master II models, including the yellow gold 116688 and the white gold with platinum bezel 116689, launched in 2007, featured a commanding 44mm diameter case. This made the watch immediately noticeable. Beyond its size, its unique programmable memory function and high-end pricing distinguished it within Rolex's professional range. Its development necessitated the creation of entirely new movements, starting with the Calibre 4160, later succeeded by the Calibre 4161. An Everose Rolesor edition, the 116681, followed in 2011, and a full-steel version, the 116680, was released in 2013, incorporating the updated Calibre 4161. A tenth-anniversary update in 2017 brought redesigned markers and Mercedes hands, though the core of the watch remained unchanged. However, by April 2024, the collection was discontinued, possibly due to its substantial dimensions and bold visual appeal not resonating with a broader audience.
The re-emergence of the Yacht-Master II after a two-year hiatus is a notable surprise, marked by extensive revisions. The most striking transformation is evident on the dial, which has been completely restyled, now featuring a matte white lacquer finish. The signature regatta timing scale, previously prominent on the dial, has been relocated to a newly contoured flange on the outer perimeter. The hour markers and hands, available in white or yellow gold depending on the model, are now adorned with Cerachrom inserts, with additional red lacquer accents on the 126680 and yellow gold details on the 126688.
Externally, the new Yacht-Master II maintains its 44mm diameter, with a height of 13.90mm. It comes equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel featuring a blue Cerachrom insert. Notably, this bezel no longer displays the 10-to-zero countdown scale but instead presents a traditional 60-minute graduation. The latest generation also departs from the Ring Command system, with programming and operation now managed via the winch-style pushers located on the right side of the case.
A significant upgrade lies within, as the new generation introduces the Calibre 4162, succeeding the Calibre 4161. This movement incorporates Rolex's most recent technical advancements, including the Chronergy escapement. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, the Calibre 4162 features a Parachrom hairspring with a Rolex overcoil, and its oscillator is mounted on the Paraflex shock absorber. Powered by a central rotor, it boasts an impressive 72-hour power reserve. These features establish the Calibre 4162 as one of Rolex's most sophisticated movements currently in production.
The Yacht-Master II is completed with a three-link Oyster bracelet, crafted to match the case material. These new bracelets are broader than their predecessors, contributing to a more balanced and harmonious profile for the watch. They feature brushed outer links and polished central links, secured by an Oysterlock folding clasp that is slightly more streamlined than before. The Easylink comfort extension allows for approximately 5mm of adjustability, ensuring a comfortable fit. The Oystersteel Ref. 126680 is priced at EUR 19,850, while the 18k yellow gold Ref. 126688 is available for EUR 56,700.
