APS-C Cameras Dominate 2025 Best-Seller List, Outperforming Full-Frame Models

Japanese retail analytics firm BCN+R has released its annual report on the top-selling interchangeable-lens mirrorless cameras for 2025, revealing a significant market preference for APS-C models, with Canon and Sony devices leading the charge.

The BCN Ranking, derived from sales data across approximately 40% of Japan’s electronics retail sector, including prominent online platforms, indicates a robust consumer appetite for more accessible camera systems. Topping the charts was the Canon EOS R50, an entry-level APS-C mirrorless camera that debuted in early 2023, effectively succeeding the popular EOS M50 Mark II. Following closely, the Sony ZV-E10 II, a vlogging-centric APS-C model released in mid-2024, secured the second spot, further cementing the popularity of crop-sensor cameras. Canon's EOS R10, another APS-C offering known for its competitive features, claimed third place, while Sony’s original ZV-E10 and the enduring a6400 rounded out the top five, underscoring the dominance of APS-C technology in the consumer market.

Interestingly, despite the widespread professional and enthusiast discourse around the perceived superiority of full-frame cameras, the 2025 sales data demonstrates a clear consumer preference for APS-C and Micro Four Thirds formats. Only one full-frame camera, the Sony a7C II, made it into the top ten, securing the eighth position. Other notable crop-sensor cameras in the list included the Nikon Z50 II, Fujifilm X-M5, and Nikon Z30, all APS-C, alongside the Micro Four Thirds Olympus PEN E-P7. This trend suggests that while full-frame cameras may offer advanced imaging capabilities, the compelling combination of performance, affordability, and compact size offered by APS-C and Micro Four Thirds systems resonates more strongly with the broader consumer base, often providing a photographic experience that far exceeds their price point.
