Matt Duffer, renowned for crafting intricate fictional realms, initially found himself at a loss when contemplating the design possibilities of his newly acquired Manhattan pied-à-terre. The century-old apartment, untouched by modernity save for a somewhat out-of-place drop ceiling from the 1950s, presented a unique challenge. However, his fiancée, Sarah Hindsgaul, celebrated hair designer for "Stranger Things" and possessing a natural knack for interior aesthetics, immediately recognized the latent beauty within the property's dilapidated state. She was drawn to its generous rooms, charming French doors, and the modest outdoor area, despite acknowledging its condition as a "hot mess."
Crafting the Heart of the Home: The Living Room's Bold Statement and Dining Room's Artistic Flair
The apartment, a 2,300-square-foot "classic six" on the Upper East Side, necessitated extensive refurbishment, a process that Duffer and Hindsgaul, whose main residence is in Los Angeles, welcomed. The original layout offered a solid foundation but demanded a complete reimagination. The couple entrusted Kyle O’Donnell of Gramercy Design, whose previous work on a loft for a "Stranger Things" actor had deeply impressed them, with the task. O’Donnell embraced the opportunity to meticulously transform every aspect of the residence, emphasizing respect for the building's historical character while infusing contemporary touches. The living room became a canvas for O'Donnell's ingenious solutions, where a structural limitation preventing the removal of a drop ceiling was ingeniously transformed into a striking recessed oval "dome," adorned with a sculptural plaster chandelier. This innovative approach turned an obstacle into a centerpiece. Furthermore, a substantial 15-foot Brutalist sofa, capable of accommodating over ten guests, was custom-designed for the living area, upholstered in a rich rust-colored mohair to withstand the playful energy of their young daughters. The adjacent dining room, a vibrant space, is enveloped in a custom hand-painted mural by Dean Barger, depicting lush botanical scenes in green and amber hues, perfectly complementing the room's elegant antique furniture.
Scandinavian Influences and Functional Kitchen Design
The renovation also involved thoughtful modifications to the apartment's existing framework. The once-cramped primary bathroom was expanded by relocating the vanity to a new dressing area, and the kitchen's footprint was subtly enlarged. Hindsgaul, drawing inspiration from her Copenhagen upbringing, desired a more contemporary European kitchen. This vision was realized through custom wall tiles depicting Viking ships, commissioned from Douglas Watson Studio in England, which mimic a Delft-style mural, adding a personal touch that celebrates her heritage.

Hindsgaul admits her initial fear that the color scheme might appear "too sexy," but it quickly became her favorite room, even inspiring the aesthetic for her new haircare brand. Duffer echoes this sentiment, finding the bedroom, and indeed the entire apartment, to be a calming refuge from the energetic pace of New York City, a place for peaceful retreat amidst his demanding work on "Stranger Things" spin-offs and feature films.
